GTAIV Movie Deal?

Wednesday 6 February 2008 | Post a comment

Grand Theft Auto IV developer Rockstar Games have denied recent reports that they were moments away from signing a movie deal to make a GTA film starring controversial rapper Eminem.

According to American magazine Variety, Rockstar were "virtually in place with one of the six major studios", reports GamesIndustry.biz. It was also speculated that Take-Two pulled out of the deal at the last moment.

However, vocal Rockstar President Dan Houser has absolutely rubbished the claims. "Some movie producers were trying to put something together to entice us to make a movie, as studios and production teams frequently have done in the past," he admitted to MTV, but told the broadcaster "this proposal was no more interesting than the numerous others we receive. We never entertained proceeding with the project."

The fact is that GTA is a great formula for a game, but much of what defines it would not make for a decent movie. Free roaming, go anywhere, do anything just doesn't work in a film world where you can't interact. Houser seems to appreciate this, as when pressed on if there will ever be a GTA movie he responds with "It is not something we are currently interested in."

Retailers hail 'GTA IV' as 'event of 08

Tuesday 5 February 2008 | Post a comment

Came across an interesting commentary about the expectations for GTAIV. They said that GTA IV is one of the most anticipated games of 2008 and should set the benchmark for other games to follow. Some industry analysts are disappointed because the game is not being launched in the peak Easter season but believe the game will not be affected by this due to the expectations it holds. They then come to the question of which console it will sell better on, PS3 or XBox 360. Here is the article.
"The retail community has expressed the anticipation that is building around the April 29 release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV.

“As with previous GTA releases, GTA IV will be the benchmark for all future releases with regards to volume of sales. The question is what will sell more: PS3 or Xbox 360?” said Jonathan Edwards, games buying manager at Tesco.

Tricia Brennan, buying director at Game, added: “There is huge consumer anticipation for GTA IV. This truly is the launch event of 2008. Customers cannot wait to be able to play the game.”

Many industry insiders have said it is disappointing that Rockstar will miss the peak Easter sales period, but the trade believes it will not affect sales.

Juliana Foley, trading manager for games at Entertainment UK, stated: “I don’t believe the timing of the release will matter to the long-term success of Rockstar’s GTA IV.

“A non-peak GTA release will certainly change the dynamic for other triple-A releases. However, GTA is both day one and an evergreen sales opportunity. It should still feature highly in the Christmas charts as well as at launch.”"

Exclusive GTA4 Preview in Next Month's EGM

Tuesday 5 February 2008 | Post a comment

GTA4.net's webmaster, adamcs, has reported that Electronic Gaming Monthly will feature a total exclusive on GTA IV.
"We have just received word from Dan Hsu (editor-in-chief of US video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly) that next month's issue of the magazine will feature an exclusive preview of Grand Theft Auto IV. We are also told that it contains "another really cool, exclusive thing that can't be mentioned right now." Hmm, perhaps an exclusive interview or something? We should have more details in a couple of weeks. The issue comes out in the beginning of March, so be sure to keep an eye out for it."

We Are Back In Action

Monday 4 February 2008 | Post a comment

Finally our head administrator has gotten the server back in working order. He quotes:
"Greetings everyone,

Well we finally have completed our server move. After nearly a week of tweaking and editing code, it seems that we have caught all of the bugs and are ready to relaunch the site on our brand new dedicated server. First off, I want to thank everyone who helped us in getting things moved over. We are excited for our new home and we think it will allow us to grow and prosper for many years to come.

For those of you who are not aware, we have moved to a virtual dedicated server. What this means for you, the user, is now you will get more reliable service with faster downloads and uploads than ever before. In fact, our new server is almost 6 times faster than our old one - something you will notice immediately once you begin downloading our files. Also, downtime for our network should be decreased considerably. As many of you had noticed, our site would sometimes go down quite a bit, which should now be fixed.

As we start on our new server, there are undoubtedly somethings that may not work correctly right away. In fact, even at this moment after nearly 72 hours straight of fixing errors, we are still working to put the finishing touches on our new site. If you do come across any unusual errors or something that is not working properly, please contact us and let us know about it.

Most importantly, we would like to thank you for sticking with us. We know it has been a rocky week trying to access your account and files, but in the end we feel that it was all worth it. Your patience was greatly appreciated.

Thanks again guys, and enjoy the network!"

If you do come across errors, please email us or post your questions/comments here

In the while, I am personally still challenged because of my ailing ISP. I am just praying that they fix their servers soon. In the mean time I experience speeds of 2kbps up. Anyway...keep the comments coming in.

GTA IV Australian Version Uncensored

Monday 4 February 2008 | Post a comment

The Australian version of GTA IV will now be sold with an uncensored rating, according to Rockstar Games. We remember the game was given a MA15+ rating for strong violence, strong coarse language, and drug and sexual references a couple months back.

""No GTA has been censored since Vice City. Grand Theft Auto IV has been rated in its entirety. The rating is on the OFLC website.""

Rockstar prepared for GTA IV media backlash

Monday 4 February 2008 | Post a comment

In years past the Grand Theft Auto series has always stirred up controversy. This game will be no different. Monsters and Critics has posted a nice article on this subject. Here is a snippet from it.

"Given the established association Rockstar has with controversy, not least through the San Andreas ‘Hot Coffee’ mod scandal and the studio’s current Manhunt 2 ratings tussle, it comes a little surprise to see the studio preparing for the worst.

Following a recent GTA IV game demonstration given to members of the North American press, Rockstar Games founder Dan Houser was asked if he was anticipating the game to receive a knee-jerk wave of criticism from certain media sources.

"I expect it because we've had so much of it in the past," replied Houser. "I wish people would treat videogames the same as other media.

Houser went on to say that the mainstream media does not appear to want to accept videogames in that way, preferring to paint the industry as "a conveniant enemy for people."

Houser’s opinion echoes similar comments put forth by EA’s Jeff Green in a recent letter to FOX News calling for an apology after the broadcaster wrongly accused BioWare’s sci-fi epic Mass Effect of containing full-frontal nudity and graphic scenes of interactive sex."

GTA IV will send tabloids mad says Dan Houser

Thursday 31 January 2008 | Post a comment

Dan Houser was recently talking to MCVUK and has said that he expects an OTT reaction by the press. We aren't partially surprised about this because all GTA games have caused a stir in the media in some form or another. Hot coffee anyone?

"If the graphics are slightly cartoony, we make sure the writing is slightly cartoony to match that," he commented. "Obviously, the graphics have gone closer to realism, so we wanted everything else to be closer to realism as well."

"I expect it because we've had so much of it in the past," said Houser. "I wish people would treat video games the same as other media. They seem to not want to do that for reasons that I don't understand. It's a convenient enemy for people."

We totally agree with this statement. Manhunt 2 is just one of many examples. Just to let you know the release date for GTA IV (If you don't already have it written on your wall) again it is April 29th

IGN: A New Breed of Action

Tuesday 29 January 2008 | Post a comment

IGN has posted an article describing the GTAIV combat system...Once again, nothing new but something to speak about nonethless.

""What we've seen happen over the last couple of years is that a new standard for combat mechanics has emerged for third person videogames, regardless of genre. Whether it's an action adventure game like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a straight-up shooter like Gears of War or an open-world title like GTA IV, certain things are expected – smooth, accurate control for targeting, intuitive cover mechanics and non-restrictive agility. GTA IV checks off all those boxes, and while going hands-on will be the most important test, it's clear from our latest – extensive – eyes on, that Rockstar North is on the right track.""

Jack Thompson responds to GTAIV release date

As usual Jack had something enlightening to say about the eventual release of GTAIV. He vows to keep this "murder simulator for violence against women, cops, and innocent bystanders" off the market. Read below what else is being reported by Joystiq.

"It's been a while since we've heard anything from the infamous anti-gaming crusader, Miami attorney Jack Thompson -- then again, being faced with the possibility of being disbarred in your home state is enough to really tie a guy up. However, with last week's announcement of a late-April release date for Grand Theft Auto IV came Thompson's mandatory adverse response to the series, and negativity towards Take Two, the game's distributor.

Contained within an email from Thompson were promises to keep this "murder simulator for violence against women, cops, and innocent bystanders" out of the hands of children by contacting "state and federal officials" to warn of the game's immediate danger. Though no immediate threats were made towards Take Two or Rockstar Games, we're sure the fireworks will really start going off by the time GTA IV drops April 29 -- which just happens to be around the same time the outcome of Thompson's Florida Bar trial will be decided."

Corporate Info: Take-Two Stock Jumps on GTAIV News

Monday 28 January 2008 | Post a comment

Here is some corporate info about Take Two. Interesting how just the utterance of a release date did this.

A Quote from the PC-World article
"SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Take-Two Interactive Software Inc said on Thursday it will release the highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto IV" video game on April 29, sending its shares up about 11 percent.

The announcement lays to rest lingering concerns over Take-Two's most valuable property, which was delayed from its original release date last fall.

The title is the latest installment of the "GTA" franchise, one of the most popular video game series of all time and one that has stirred controversy for casting players as thugs who steal cars, run drugs and murder rivals.

"GTA IV," widely expected to be the top-selling title of 2008, will be released for Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 and Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 home gaming consoles, Take-Two said.

Take-Two shares were up $1.57, or 10.9 percent, to $16.03 in mid-morning Nasdaq trade. The stock has fallen 11.6 percent over the past year but has risen 30 percent since hitting a year low of $12.25 when it delayed "GTA IV" in August."

- A CV listing Niko's home address
- A police report about Niko stealing a car, the damage inflicted upon the car, and information about him using another car to escape the authorities
- Links to previous GTA Installments

Here is the quoted script that could be a cutscene:
"We don't want him running rampaging in the city, we all know what happened in the Vercetti case back in 2003! Liberty City is alot bigger than it once was so stay alert."

Let's Hear From You!

Friday 25 January 2008 | Post a comment

We are thinking of implementing a new system whereby GTA IV fans can send in their questions and we will answer them by posting in on the front news page. The reason we choose to do this is for the benefit of everyone. A problem that occurred in the past was, many people would email asking the same questions, over and over. Having the question posted would save us and you all time in the end. We will also have a page listing all questions posted in the past so users could check before emailing.

Post your comments about this idea.

Two Animated XP Wallpapers Posted

Friday 25 January 2008 | Post a comment

We got a nice tip from MysteryGamer of our GTAIV Fan Club to make some countdown wallpapers. We decided to do just that! We have made two wallpapers that you can have on your desktop that are fully animated with our countdown clock! This currently only applies to XP users. We are working on Vista ones, but they will take a bit more time. Below are two static screenshots of the wallpapers.

The images are static, but the wallpapers will not be. Basically your making your desktop a webpage, so your desktop will read from a page on GTA4HQ and it\'s fully functional. For an example, click here. Please, PLEASE view the readme on how to implement these wallpapers to your WINDOWS XP Operating System. Right now, we don\'t have anything made for Vista, but we are in the process of working on it. Hope you guys enjoy these!

Merger: Grand Theft Central & GTA4HQ

Thursday 24 January 2008 | Post a comment

I would like to be the first to welcome Brad and his loyal fans to GTA4HQ! The site may look a little different than Grand Theft Central does, but we hope you find all the links you need on the left navigation bar. If you're a Grand Theft Central patron, we have taken the time to bring over most of the pages that Brad had on the website, and will continue to keep adding more content in the days to come.

With this merger we have combined forces to truly bring you a GTAIV super site. We hope you approve of this move, as Brad and I thought long and hard about it before a final decision was reached. Brad and I take a lot of pride in the website, and the content that you read. We hope you make us your number one GTAIV resource!

If you are currently an affiliate of Grand Theft Central and would like to become an affiliate here, please message us, or use the form on the website. Thanks!

An In-Depth Look at Euphoria

Thursday 24 January 2008 | Post a comment

IGN has taken a close look at the NaturalMotion Euphoria animation engine used in Grand Theft Auto 4. It seems like this new animation engine is going to greatly increase the realism of the game.

"In a more practical, action-oriented setting, enemies are also imbued with Euphoria's influence. When Niko is unloading a clip into his adversary, none of the reactionary movements to the hot lead are canned or scripted. The hapless bad guy recoils naturally in response to being struck by the bullet. Wound him enough and he'll fall backwards, slouch on the ground or start to try and crawl away to cover with his last ounces of strength. Shoot him on a ledge, and he'll topple backwards or lose his balance and plummet, arms waving, to his death. In the most recent trailer, you might recall a body falling onto a four-wheel drive. This was part of a mission involving Niko sniping thugs off of high points in a construction yard. The falling body and its final impact are also controlled by Euphoria. It's actually quite moving and unnerving to watch such a logical cause/effect relationship play out as naturally as it does."

We have been hearing reports from around the net that the PC version of GTAIV will be released in October. Now this is still just a rumor but stay tuned as we monitor for any updates. Below is an article that was posted at GamersHell, check it out below.

R* Sits down with MTV for an exclusive interview

Thursday 24 January 2008 | Post a comment

Rockstars Jeronimo Barrera sits down with MTV for an exclusive interview. We find out more information about the cause of the delay, relationships, and much more, check it out below!

"NEW YORK — "Grand Theft Auto IV" will be the biggest entertainment experience of the year and make its players feel like immigrants newly arrived in America, according to a developer working on the game.

After showcasing a nearly complete version of "Grand Theft Auto IV" on the Xbox 360 to MTV News for an hour and a half earlier this week, Rockstar Games Vice President of Product Development Jeronimo Barrera talked about how delays have shaped "GTA IV," how the game handles sex and violence this time around, and more.

"I don't see anything being bigger in 2008 in any entertainment," Barrera said as he sat on a black couch in Rockstar's demo room, proudly sporting a white T-shirt with a large "IV" printed on the front. "We think it's that big, and we just have to get the word out."

What Barrera and the development team that handles the game in New York and in Scotland-based Rockstar North are promising is the king of open-world games. Rockstar Games popularized the go-anywhere, do-anything open-world genre with "Grand Theft Auto III" in 2001. This new game is intended to be the next leap. "We don't want anybody else to raise the bar for a genre that we created and that everybody else ripped off," Barrera said. "So we definitely want to shock not just the players, but the industry. I'm not talking about shock value. I'm talking about just how big it is and just how many crazy, bananas things you can do in the game."

"GTA IV" was initially going to make its splash in 2007, when it was scheduled for an October release. Thursday (January 24) morning, Rockstar announced a new release date of April 29. And the delay, Barrera said, makes the game stronger. "We wanted the time, and I think we made the right choice. It was very difficult to make the choice because everybody wanted it. But we thought, you know, what with that extra bit of time, it's just going to be that much better and there will be more systems out." "

Reports are coming in to us that the delay was because of development issues with the PS3. Rockstar hinted that GTA IV may have actually been ready for release back in October if it were not for the PS3 development going slowly.

A Rockstar rep has come out and told MTV that the PS3 was a big factor in why GTA IV had to be delayed beyond its scheduled holiday 2007 release date in either October or November.

He did state though that the development is at the point now where the PS3 version has caught up to the Xbox 360 version.

He stated that the PS3 is no longer an issue in terms of the development of GTA IV on it, stating that it is identical to the Xbox 360 version.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that the reason for the delay of GTA IV was due to “technological problems,” or “challenges.”

The rep told MTV News that “It’s really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that.”

He stated “That’s not to say, there’s anything wrong with the PS3 version. It’s awesome. They’re both identical.”

Microsoft Dropping Xbox to $299 for GTAIV?

Tuesday 22 January 2008 | Post a comment

So far this is just a rumor that is going around that was posted over at TheBitBag. But lets look at the possibility that this may be true. Considering that the PS3 will also have the game, Microsoft is trying to get the people who haven't yet decided on a console yet. This could possibly be a smart move on Microsoft's part. Below is the tip that was posted, check it out.

"Basically, some unnamed person has tipped that Microsoft will be dropping the price of the Premium 360 another $49 on the same day that GTAIV gets released. This would be a smart move for Microsoft as we know millions upon millions of people love the GTA series. Now if you are still a PS2 or Xbox owner sitting on the fence waiting for this game to be released, then it would be a good time to invest in a next gen system."

More GTAIV Features Released

Monday 21 January 2008 | Comments [ 1 ]

Originally posted over at GameDaily, new features have been confirmed for GTAIV. Check out the article they released today!

"Another 'X' on the calendar means another day closer to the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this spring. So far, we've been introduced to lead character Niko and his quest for the American dream in Liberty City. Today we take a closer look at Rockstar's free-roaming action game and new features designed to make the game "grittier' and "more realistic" than before.

Use Technology to Get Ahead

The benefit of having a Grand Theft Auto in the present instead of the '80s and '90s – new technology. Niko can keep in touch with his comrades by using his cell phone. Tap into the Internet and police computers to locate and identify targets and use the car's GPS system to get where you're going faster. Bonus for jacking nicer rides: they come with voice-enabled GPS systems.

Harder Police Alert System

Escaping the police gets trickier this time around. Once five-oh is on your tail, the search radius in your HUD gets wider and you have to escape. Get spotted by a cop while still inside the radius, the search area re-centers on you and you have to escape again. The good news: big shootouts during missions don't necessarily alert the police to your presence.

No More Character Customization
Rockstar removes the character customization and light leveling up (by eating, working out) that was included in San Andreas and returns the focus to the main character and his climb up the criminal ladder in Liberty City.

Scale Tall Buildings
Since the game takes place in a big skyscraper-filled city, the action will go vertical this time around. Niko will embark on missions that involve riding to the top of a tall building to snipe at enemies below. He'll also be able to commandeer helicopters and land on top of buildings at times. Also, shooting enemies standing on tall buildings or platforms might, if you're lucky, send them into a spectacular dive onto the pavement below.

Control Your Aim
You can aim freely, lock on to targets and all weapons include a zoom function (certain guns will zoom more than others). The weapon selection has been paired down from the ridiculous -- e.g. no more flamethrower, chainsaw – to the more standard rocket launcher, sniper rifles and automatic weapons like an AK-47 and M4 assault rifle.

Hail a Cab

Instead of always jacking cars to get around, you can hail a cab and choose a destination by setting a waypoint on a map, or choosing from a list of predetermined locations. You can either sit and enjoy the scenery, or for an extra fee, press a button to skip the Sunday drive and arrive immediately.

Make Friends
Never underestimate the power of schmoozing, in real-life or in Grand Theft Auto IV. In-between missions, call up your cronies to hang out and build relationships that can lead to say... someone meeting you in an alley with a secret stash of guns. Or, meet your cousin at a bar and then try to drive him home safely after you're well beyond the legal limit (while the in-game camera sways wildly). Nothing builds the family bond like drunk driving.

Yes, There's Multiplayer
Grand Theft Auto IV will have multiplayer, which may include cooperative play in certain areas of the game. No other details have been revealed yet, other than it will involve more than "your standard deathmatch" shootfest."

Rumor: April 25th Seems to be it.

Monday 21 January 2008 | Post a comment

According to this report over at Spong.com. It reports that April 25th is the release date of GTAIV. Although Rockstar has not given us a specific confirmation date, April 25th keeps poping up. When we hear from Rockstar of an official date you will see our official countdown clock posted. Keep checking back for more updates. Here is the article:

"A North American stock-trading website called Tradingmarkets is carrying the news that Grand Theft Auto IV is "...scheduled to reach retailers in April". When combined with an independent third-party source who has contacted SPOnG, we would actually place the release date as Friday April 25th.

This would also agree with UK industry journal, MCV's report from December last year stating the date of April 25th - which is also the also last day in Take Two's fiscal fourth quarter.

MCV's report was classified by a Rockstar spokesman as, "rumour and speculation" at the time.

Here's what the Tradingmarkets says in full: "Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (TTWO) and the video game industry seem to have survived the holiday season relatively unscathed. The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled to reach retailers in April and will certainly give a boost to 2008. However, the company is no longer dependent solely on the success of its key franchises such as Grand Theft. In 2007, 27% of revenues came from the top ten games versus 50% in 2005."

We are also informed, "Additionally, on Jan 8, Take-Two acquired Illusion Softworks, a Czech Republic game developer of franchises such as Mafia, Hidden Dangerous and Vietcong, for undisclosed terms. The covering analysts are mixed on the 2008 outlook with four analysts bullish on the company in the last month, raising 2008 estimates by an average of 11 cents from 91 cents to $1.02 and one lowering estimates. Read the Nov 16, 2007 analysis". "

Retailer offers pre-order cards

Friday 18 January 2008 | Post a comment

Entertainment retailer Zavvi is offering pre-order cards for highly anticipated Rockstar title Grand Theft Auto IV, ensuring customers receive a copy on the day of release.

The retailer offered a similar scheme for the release of Halo 3 last year.
"These highly collectable cards will add value to our customer’s experience, while giving Zavvi a point of difference over similar pre-order schemes,"
said Stephen Lynn, Zavvi’s senior PR and promotions manager.
"The GTA franchise has a loyal fan base and the collectable cards will be a must have for everyone that loves the game, allowing them to keep a little bit of GTA in their wallet"

Have you played it yet?

Tuesday 15 January 2008 | Post a comment

By "it" I mean the GTA Series on Steam. So it's been quite a while since I have played GTA3, and I thought it would be a lot of fun. So I went into Steam and purchased the GTA Series, and since I'm on a pretty fast connection I had the games within a few hours.

First thing I noticed when I loaded up GTA3 was how incredibly fast load times were in the game. Now depending on your computer it may vary, but for mine it was literally only a second. This is so far from the case with games these days. Even thought GTA3 didn't have the next gen graphics that I am used to in games, it makes up for it with the game play and story. Although the sound in the game I think is a bit off par, maybe it was just my system though.

So your wanting to know what my point is? What I am getting at is, Rockstar is promoting that this is going to be a "Next Gen" game. My point is, the game play, and story lines are so excellent in all the series, they don't have to push for this. Even if this game doesn't live up to the "Next Gen" standards, I think it will still be what we are looking for in Grand Theft Auto!

Wish to comment or give your thoughts about GTA on Steam or anything else I talked about here, head over to our forums.

Rumor: Hillary Clinton in GTAIV?

Tuesday 15 January 2008 | Post a comment

It seems that a lot of rumors are going around these days, whether it's Jack Thompson going to be in the game, or whether it's going to be Hillary, Rockstar always has a way of getting there jabs out there. I came across an article that states that Hillary just might be in the game. How will they disguise her you ask? As a prostitute of course! Check out what the article had to say.

"With the race for the Whitehouse most definitely on (every TV in the United States), you’d be well advised to file the following distasteful story under ‘sensationalist tripe’ until further notice:

An article appearing this week on Seriously News is claiming that Democratic Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s ongoing drive against the effects of violent videogames is about to be thrown to the street and given a good shafting… and not in a metaphorical sense.

Specifically, the article suggests a blog-posted press release (which is neither posted nor linked) has revealed that controversial studio Rockstar Games is to include Clinton as a prostitute in the hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. And not mapped onto the face of just a single woman of the night in the upcoming sandbox epic, but as all of them.

That last detail is more than enough to suggest this particular nugget of speculation is little more than bad taste publicity - not least because the same NPC character used repeatedly (Clinton or otherwise) would look truly generic and goes against the franchise’s longstanding ethos of variety and ambition.

However, without going into too much detail, the report goes on to say that players will be able to engage in sexual acts with the in-game version of Senator Clinton, after which the sated prostitute will ask: "Will you still vote for me?" And, in typical GTA style, should the player choose to murder the prostitute rather than issue payment for services rendered she will whimper: "Now I’ll never get to be president."

Disgraceful. Presently, there is absolutely no proof to suggest that this supposed story is anything but a complete work of fiction - especially considering that the apparent source of the article has been conveniently misplaced.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that any such move by Rockstar Games has the words ‘impending lawsuit’ stamped all over it. With the studio already saddled with the Hot Coffee debacle and no-end of persistent controversy regarding its Manhunt franchise, mapping the likeness of a presidential candidate onto the faces of GTA’s prostitutes could be considered an act of suicidal proportions.

And, finally, Grand Theft Auto IV - of all Rockstar’s games - certainly does not need controversial jibber-jabber such as this to ensure it sells units upon release.

Expect fervent denials from Rockstar and Take-Two in the not too distant future."

Please remember that this isn't fact, but merely a rumor right now, Rockstar has not confirmed this yet.

*Update

This was posted over at Planet Grand Theft Auto:

It's no secret that the release of Grand Theft Auto IV is very near, and with that will come new previews on major gaming websites.

IGN, GameSpy and TeamXbox received their simultaneous demonstration earlier today in a San Francisco hotel. They had just over an hour with the game, and while they can't say anything regarding what they were shown, I have been told that the game is looking very polished at this stage. Previews from respective sites will be going up next week with new information and screenshots! Stay tuned!

Rumor: March 11 Release Date?

Monday 14 January 2008 | Post a comment

So this is yet another release date rumor. As said in the title this is simply a rumor and nothing is fact, until we hear it from R*. GamingTarget.com has released this news today, check it out below.

Baker & Taylor, a distributor that mainly works with libraries, has published a few interesting release dates in their January 2008 "Alert" catalog.

The big news is that Baker & Taylor has Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360, PS3) down for a March 11 release, much earlier than any other retailer is predicting. This is the first time Baker & Taylor has published future release dates for video games in their catalog, but their listed dates for DVDs are almost always on the mark. So while this is not concrete confirmation of a release date for SingStar or Grand Theft Auto IV, it certainly is interesting.

Take-Two Forecast Looking Good

Gamasutra is reporting that things are starting to look a little better for Take-Two. With higher retail prices and fewer licensed properties, the forecast for Take-Two's financial situation is looking better. They have been decreasing there sports licenses , and far fewer non sports licensed games. Check out the full article below.

"Cowan analyst Doug Creutz has taken an extensive look at Take-Two's forthcoming year, noting that despite investor shakiness, he believes the publisher has a good chance at achieving its 35 percent gross margin target as it moves to more internally developed games and fewer licensed properties.

Creutz said the margin target should be hit despite internal development and royalty cost increases over the next fiscal year, primarily because of four key reasons.

The first is that the company has been moving from low-margin distribution revenues to higher-margin publishing revenues, as well as finding lower publishing costs as a percent of revenue because of higher retail prices on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii games.
User Posted image
The latter, says Creutz, will also be helped by "volume discounts on hardware royalties driven by GTA IV and other hit titles." Take-Two also currently has one externally developed game on its fiscal 2008 schedule, Borderlands, which he says will significantly decrease royalty and development costs.

Finally, Creutz says its bottom line will be helped by both a slight decrease in its sports licenses, and far fewer non sports licensed games.

"The most significant portion of Take-Two's licensing costs is its exclusive contract with Major League Baseball," he explains. "This is evident from the jump in licensing costs from $6.3MM in FY05 (the last year of the non-exclusive contract) to $52.8MM in FY06 (the first year of the exclusive contract)."

While none of those deals are changing in fiscal 2008, the company's former reliance on licensed titles like Fantastic Four 2 and Ghost Rider has fallen by the wayside. Creutz concludes that "non-sports license costs to decline since the company has no significant licensed television or movie properties this year (the company is publishing games based on Nickelodeon's Dora and Diego properties, but we think the license costs for those titles will be very minor)."

Another Teaser Site?

Saturday 12 January 2008 | Post a comment

GTA4.TV staff have discovered a possible new teaser site for GTA IV. Honestly it was a very good guess since there were no actual blatent clues in the game. They have discovered the domain name www.beanmachinecoffee.com. When they checked the DNS setting in comparison to the confirmed www.weazelnews.com DNS info, both matched up so we believe Rockstar has also parked this domain until the site comes on stream. Here is a quote of the news post from GTA4.TV:

"While staring at a few of the screen shots at GTA4.com, the official GTA4 website, I stumbled across a screen shot which was taken in front of a coffee shop called "Bean Machine Coffee" and decided to enter it into my URL bar. Sure enough, it appears that we have stumbled across another yet-to-be released GTA 4 teaser site, www.beanmachinecoffee.com

Here is a brief summary of the evidence:

In the following screen shot you can see a sign which reads "Bean Machine Coffee"

While there is no URL listed in the site, a quick visit to http://beanmachinecoffee.com/ reveals a place holder site which says that a site is coming.

After doing some research, both this website and the previously confirmed Weazelnews.com teaser site were registered on January 24th 2007, well before any GTA4 media was released, leading me to believe that BeanMachineCoffee.com is another yet-to-be released teaser site!"

GTA IV Game Play Demo

Saturday 12 January 2008 | Post a comment

Ok don't get your hopes up yet, just read the article below from Kotaku

At today's Take2 presser, a demo of GTA IV gameplay was shown. Since Take2 wouldn't allow us to take pics of the presser (and apparently even had night vision googles to prevent it!), we don't have any snap shots of the footage. Instead, you get a photo of free t-shirts!

Here's what happened: the main character Niko stands in Liberty City's equivalent of Times Square. He trots over to a black sedan. He gets in. He drives a few blocks and gets out at the docks. He looks at the water. He gets out his cell phone and calls for guns. The end.

Exciting! In Rockstar's defense, they told us it was short on purpose, and that it was simply a taste. Or a bite. Or a morsel. The code they showed was unfinished, and the music was a placeholder. What's more, the voice track hadn't yet been dropped in. Still, it looked nice and will sell exactly one bagazillion copies. You can quote me.

Possible proof of April 25th Release Date?

Originally posted over at GTA4.tv is possible proof of a confirmed release date! Although it is still rumor until we find out from Rockstar themselves. Check out the article.

Rumours have been flying around for awhile now stating that GTA4 will be released on April 25th, 2008 in the UK and Europe. Many game retailers are quoting this date when pre-ordering, and although I recently emailed Rockstar and enquired, they said they don't have any information on the release date just yet.

This morning I received an email from Ryan Ogden telling me he worked in a game shop and they had received a release list stating this would be the launch date. Of course I was quite skeptical, however he has since emailed me a scan of the release list, and sure enough, there it is right near the bottom. Grand Theft Auto 4 - Take2 - 25-Apr-08.

This isn't official confirmation of the release date. Nothing is official until Rockstar update their website and you read it there with your own two eyes, however I'm almost positive that the game's release date will be on or around April 25th. I'd expect this will mean an April 22nd release date for the USA.

GTAIV projected to sell 17 Million Units

Wednesday 9 January 2008 | Post a comment

An analyst from Next-Gen.biz is reporting that GTAIV is expected to sell around 17 million units.

"As you know, videogame sales are exceedingly lopsided in favor of the holiday season. This was again evident in late 2007 when games like Guitar Hero III, BioShock, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, The Orange Box and Super Mario Galaxy (among others) shared shelf space and vied for consumers’ dollars.

But there are signs that blockbuster games could be spread out a bit more evenly throughout 2008 in order to avoid such concentrated competition, according to Jesse Divnich with the simExchange, a virtual videogame stock market.

“A broader release schedule could positively affect retailers such as GameStop and make them more attractive to the investment community as they will have more months of strong sales to hedge themselves against any negative short-term economic factors,” he said in a note Wednesday.

Before the first half of 2008 ends, we can expect the release of AAA titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (expected to achieve 13.95 million units of GLS [global lifetime sales]), Wii Fit (expecting 8.7 million units of GLS), Grand Theft Auto IV (expecting 17 million units of GLS), and Metal Gear Solid 4 (expecting 4.7 million units of GLS).
Most of these big-name titles will continue the $60 price point, which has become the standard for Xbox 360 and PS3 games. Divnich said that in 2008, there will be a higher ratio of games sold for $60 to legacy games, a transition that will raise this year’s average price per game.

Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter contributed to The simExchange note, saying, “I think that the $60 price point not only will hold, but I think that publishers will continue to test higher price points during the year. In 2007, we saw Halo 3 collector's editions at $100 (or more), Guitar Hero at $100, Rock Band at $170.

"This year, we'll see the Grand Theft Auto bundle at $80 or $90, and will likely see a new offering from Guitar Hero with other instruments. I think you'll see a bunch of collector's edition games, and think that PS3 and 360 premium content will all debut at $60.”

Well GTA has always broken records, I'm sure they will break this record when all is said and done.

Trailer 4 a Hoax or Mistake?

Wednesday 9 January 2008 | Post a comment

According to an article at ComputerandVideoGames.com, Trailer IV may have been revealed a bit too early or was just a complete hoax. Cynamite.de has removed their original article since it is causing a lot of controversy. Rockstar has not commented on the situation yet though.

Rockstar is keeping quiet in the face of rumours that a fourth trailer from Grand Theft Auto IV is in the pipeline.

The rumour originally appeared on German website Cynamite.de, said to be taken from a recent interview with Rockstar. However, the site has since removed its article, leading to speculation among conspiracy theorists that the report was on the money. Either that or it was just plain wrong.

Rockstar's UK arm shed no light on the rumour on a new trailer when contacted earlier today, but a spokesperson reaffirmed that the sequel will be out in the company's financial Q2 - which runs from February this year to April 25, 2008.

Will the Rockstar hype machine release a fourth trailer before the game hits? We wouldn't be surprised. Could it announce a release date? Who knows, but it's good fun guessing.

Take-Two acquires Illusion Softworks

Tuesday 8 January 2008 | Post a comment

With all the recent talk of Take-Two being bought out by EA, nobody saw this coming, atleast I didn't. Check out what GamaSutra is reporting:

"Officials from publisher Take-Two Interactive have announced that the company has acquired Czech based developer Illusion Softworks, best known for the Hidden & Dangerous and Mafia franchises.

The developer, which will be renamed as 2K Czech, is already working on Mafia II for Take-Two. Established in 1997, Illusion Softworks has two studios in Brno and Prague in the Czech Republic, with a total of around 200 employees.

The two Hidden & Dangerous titles and the first Vietcong were published by Gathering of Developers, which was subsequently acquired by Take-Two. Since then both developer and publisher have continued to work closely, with 2K Czech CEO Petr Vochozka commenting: “We have an excellent working relationship with 2K Games and the utmost respect for them. We are pleased to become a 2K studio and are confident that this new partnership will strengthen our current and future projects”.

"The acquisition of Illusion Softworks reflects our strategic focus on owning high-value intellectual property as we continue to expand our portfolio of triple-A titles," said Ben Feder, CEO of Take-Two.

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, said: "Adding 2K Czech to our network of development studios demonstrates our strong commitment to creating great franchises and building world-class creative teams. The 2K Czech team is responsible for several very innovative and highly-regarded franchises and we look forward to continuing to develop new and existing IP together."

This is great news for all of us who don't want to see Take-Two get bought out, but doesn't mean that the acquisition still can't take place. Keep your fingers crossed.

According to a Rockstar speaker, a Trailer 4 for GTA IV has been announced. A Rockstar official conveyed this to Cynamite.

"A speaker of Rockstar Games confirmed to Cynamite.de that a fourth Trailer of GTA IV will come. The trailer will be like the previous in the film trailer-style, and no direct game scenes. A video with live action from GTA IV will be after the fourth trailer published."

Jordan from Planet Grand Theft Auto just finished up his screen shot breakdown of the trailers. He did a very professional and in depth job on them, be sure and check them out!

Below I have posted an example of how they do it:

Shot Number: 1

Description: Notice the light clouds at the top left of the shot, and the sun either rising or setting to the right. This is the replica of the Brooklyn Bridge. Two cranes are off to the left. Are they operable? Three characters can be seen walking along the bridge's walkway. There are two taxis as well as a red car. The front car seems to be riding up on the side of the bridge, almost as if it is falling off. The streets to the bottom right look absent, but hopefully development time has given way to vast improvements.
