GTA4 Multiplayer Issues

Thursday 1 May 2008 | Comments [ 2 ]

I have been getting a flood of e-mails asking "why doesn't my multiplayer work?" As soon as I have some information to pass along to everyone I will be sure to let everyone know. I am sure that they are working on a patch or a fix for the issue. But please be patient with R* they are doing all they can!

Official GTA 4 game guide out now

Wednesday 30 April 2008 | Post a comment

Found this article over at VideoGamer.com Check it out below:

"Just under 300 pages containing all the info you'll need to fully clock Rockstar's masterpiece.

By now some of you will have made your way through a considerable chunk of GTA 4, but with the end near and plenty of side missions to complete a game guide might come in handy to ensure you squeeze out every last bit of gameplay.

The BradyGames Grand Theft Auto IV Official Strategy Guide features all you'll need to know about missions, multiplayer and secret items, and includes highly detailed maps to ensure you know where you need to go. The guide also includes a bonus giant fold out map of Liberty City, which when turned over becomes a poster.

The GTA 4 Strategy Guide is available from leading retailers, with a recommend retail price of £12.99, although we've spotted it for only £8.99 on Play.com."

GTA 4's Production Budget Estimated at $100M

Wednesday 30 April 2008 | Post a comment

Check out what ShackNews is reporting:

"Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies revealed in an interview that the recently released Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) had a budget of roughly $100 million, marking the title as the most costly development of any game to date.

GTA IV's massive budget pins the title above the previous front-runner Shenmue, released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and costing an unprecedented $70 million to produce.

"It's like making a theatre production, a few movies and an album all to fit into one package," Benzies told the Times Online.

Benzies also noted that about 1,000 people pitched in on the game's development. Beyond the expected tasks of programming and design, Rockstar also set up time-lapse cameras on New York rooftops to capture the correct intensity of the rain, and took over 100,000 photographs on location to piece together Liberty City.

"We're constantly competing against ourselves," says Benzies. "If something isn't exactly right, it comes out of the game or gets fixed."

Problems with GTA4

Tuesday 29 April 2008 | Post a comment

A post recently made at Level2Gaming describes some of the bugs found associated with GTA4 and the respective consoles.

""

For many folks, April 29th (today) has been a different day. With the release of GTAIV, many folks have finally been able to get their hands on one of the most anticipated games in a long time. Now that a few hours have passed and most are playing the game, many people are having mixed feelings. For most of the fans out there, their "minds were blown" when they finally got to play the game. Many were overly impressed and could not express the joy they had. However others were slightly disappointed due to a few hitches. Also as a side note, Rockstar's Social Club is now fully functional with their own gamertag giving people a chance to show off their progress etc.

Positives

* Exceptional Graphics
* Excellent Physics Engine
* Great Music
* Fun Missions
* Numerous other features ...too many to mention
* No Region Lock for Multiplayer

GTA forum boards across the world have been on fire with members posting their progress and questions about the game. However a number of PS3 fans are having a couple of problems.

* Freezing Errors - Seems folks with the 60GB PS3 were having many freezing errors when installing the Special Edition of GTAIV...many reports are coming in claiming that this problem is occurring. A few Xbox 360 fans also complained of lock ups but the spot light really focuses on PS3 folks. Rockstar officials have been aware of the 60GB freezing problem and recommended that folks upgrade to the 80GB. WTF?

" My best bit of advice for you would be to upgrade to the 80 GB version of the PS3"
For a few 360 fans are complaining that the game is freezing every hour or so and they have to end up restarting the system (seems a problem with the disc drive is finally showing its flaws).

* PS3 Network Connection Problems - Many PS3 fans experienced network connection problems today, getting the this error:

" Cannot connect to game provider, please try again."

We just assume this is a network overload problem. I am not sure if the problem has been fixed now but I will try my best to find out.

* Graphical Problems - A few 360 fans are noticing botched and inaccurate shadowing of some images, even on 1080p settings.

These are just the initial reports and I would like to hear your views about the game so far. I personally will not be getting it for a while so I'll just be listening in the mean time. Otherwise have fun.

IGN has just given Grand Theft Auto IV a sparkling score of 10/10! They also have a video review in place, which includes some quality footage (I mean it!), go check it out!

Two new trailers have also been released. One of them was about Niko Bellic, the other was a TV commercial that came from GameSpot, which includes old and redone footage from previous trailers and new footage too.

Game Leaked over the internet + 34 new screens!

Thursday 24 April 2008 | Post a comment

Yes, Grand Theft Auto IV has been leaked over the internet. Torrent sites are already posting downloads of the Xbox 360 game, and leaked videos of the intro cutscene and gameplay has surfaced.

So far, it looks great. The game, as expected, looks better on your Game Console than on trailers or screenhots. The trees don't look as ugly as in screenhots, apparently. The graphics are also superb. I shan't reveal more, though.

34 new screens and many interviews and articles have also emerged, click here for the full stories: 24 New Screens + IGN/1up interviews, Special Edition images + many interviews/reviews + 10 screens. Enjoy!

Aaron Garbut Interviewed

Monday 21 April 2008 | Post a comment

Aaron Garbut, the Art Director at Rockstar North, has recently been interviewed by IGN and EuroGamer. Plus, Twenty brand new Screenshots of Grand Theft Auto IV, including an artwork of Mallorie, has been released by IGN, 1up and EuroGamer.

Also, 20 screenshots and one new artwork was released, click here to view them!

This is what he had to say:
We never reproduce real world locations. We take interesting or representative elements and create something new from them. It’s about taking inspiration from real places and producing something that captures the essence of it. We’re trying to take our impression of New York and keep it as that, an impression, not a laboured reproduction.”

“I think the level of detail the cut-scene guys have achieved is intense. They have the characters interacting with the world, which is hard enough, but they also have added a lot of feedback onto the world. […] Things like pillows and mattresses bending or bouncing a little under the weight of characters sitting on it, phone cords dangling and following the phones movements, liquid moving around in glasses. It’s pretty amazing.”

“There are no hard limitations on the number of active dynamic lights around the player. The real-time shadows are working across every object and surface in the game with everything self-shadowing and casting onto everything else, there’s ambient occlusion and emissive lighting on top of that. And then your standard next-gen shenanigans - light shafts, bloom, depth of field and motion blur, and of course it goes without saying everything’s rendered with HDR.”

Variety's Dan Houser Interview

Monday 21 April 2008 | Post a comment

has recently sat down with Rockstar Games’ Vice President of Creative, Dan Houser. Ben Fritz, the interviewer, has compiled an Interview, which discusses the Grand Theft Auto series, specifically Grand Theft Auto IV.

Here's a Summary:
-Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas focused on removing restrictions, while Grand Theft Auto IV focuses ore on implementing things that make sense for the location or for the character.
-In GTA IV, Rockstar aims to recreate the feeling of jumping from GTA 2 to GTA III. It’s not just an improvement; it’s something completely different. GTA 2 to GTA III was a graphical revamp; GTA III to GTA IV is a phenomenal increase in detail (in story, character, city and relationships).
-The Euphoria physics in GTA IV make the game feel more alive; greatly improved graphics make emotions easier to convey. It’s all about making the game more natural.
-The story reflects the gameplay. The more realistic the game looks and feels, the more realistic the story can be.
-Rockstar [Games]’s dream with their games is to always make everything a flowing, completely integrated experience.
-The development process for GTA IV was professional yet unstructured. The team hasn’t really changed since GTA 3, so the process is largely intuitive.
-The original Liberty City (from GTA III) was never meant to imitate New York City; it was just “vaguely East Coast-ish”, as said before in earlier interviews.
-As with previous Grand Theft Auto titles, extensive research was done to capture the true essence of New York City.
-When coming up with the concept of Niko, Rockstar wanted someone that was tough yet foreign; he’s both battle-hardened and innocent at the same time.
-It took approximately six months to come up with a rough design of what represents New York City. Actually building that representation of New York (Liberty City, in this case) took years to complete.
-As the city is created, the story begins to develop with Dan bouncing ideas off of Sam and Leslie Benzies. The story begins to be developed, artists start to work on the characters, and the designers begin to break down the story into missions.
-Developing the actual Grand Theft Auto experience is a daunting task; although the game isn’t linear, Rockstar sets it up in such a way that any given situation is predetermined. From the article: “We know where you can move around the map. We know when you can unlock everything. So although the thing to you playing game is non-linear because at any point you might have 15 things you can do, we can track on a huge multi-tiered doc, where you can be. So we know at that point can’t see other things. We’re trying to tell a story, design a videogame and take you on a trip around the world all at the same time.“
-While San Andreas and Vice City took much influence from films, GTA IV does not. With the Rockstar team being based in New York City (and much of the team having lived there their entire lives), it makes more sense to base the game off of their own first-hand knowledge and experience of the city.
-The main reason that we haven’t seen multiplayer Grand Theft Auto in the past is technical limitations; the hardware just couldn’t handle the strain that a full GTA multiplayer experience would dish out.
-For GTA IV, the multiplayer experience isn’t meant to be revolutionary or completely innovative; it’s simply meant to be the best multiplayer GTA experience possible.
Multiplayer recreates moments while singleplayer creates narrative; it’s all a very cinematic experience.
The storytelling experience in GTA IV is far beyond anything we’ve seen in any Grand Theft Auto title to date.
When we look at Niko’s situation in GTA IV, we see him as a serious individual with problems that he most overcome; the world that he’s stuck in, and the issues of those around Niko, are considerably ridiculous by comparison. It’s this tone that defines the game.

PSM3 Review

Sunday 20 April 2008 | Post a comment

French gaming magazine PSM3 is the latest in an ever-growing list of media outlets that has been invited to (p)review GTA4. The key points from their article are below - be aware that there is a possible spoiler so you may want to be careful when reading these.

- The use of L2 & R2 for braking and accelerating is confirmed.
- The game supposedly "looks great at 1080p".
- You can use the underground metro/subway system to get around the city.
- A weapon shop has been confirmed to be in the game.
- Packie is Irish.
- *Possible Spoiler*: One mission involves robbing a bank. Police and SWAT teams are after you after the heist and you must escape through the underground metro system.
- When you purchase clothes, you click on the item and you try it out straight away; there are none of the unbearable loading times from San Andreas.
- Pay 'n' Spray's are confirmed but only to change your car paint. They won't affect your star rating.
- There are some problems with the aiming system - Niko sometimes feels 'heavy' while moving and the A.I. can be dumb at times, but this is barely noticeable and fairly excusable considering the scale and the complexity of the environment around you.
- Best game ever made.

Score given: 20/20

Rockstar's Take on Australian Rating Edits

Thursday 10 April 2008 | Post a comment

A few days ago, Rockstar announced they made an edited version to meet the Australian's review board of requirements. They have finally commented on the whats and whys of this move.

"The Australian version of Grand Theft Auto IV was rated by the OFLC in December 2007 as MA15+. Unlike the US and Europe, Australia still lacks an R18+ rating for video games and as a result many games are edited for release in Australia, including most previous Grand Theft Auto releases.

While there are some minor differences between the Australian and US/EU versions, they are not significant and we do not believe they take away from the level of scope and detail that make GTA IV such an incredible experience. We would not release the game in Australia if we believed these differences compromised the quality of the game in any way.

We strongly support the OLFC and will continue to work within their guidelines; however we believe the government needs to bring games in line with other media by introducing an R18+ rating, or edits to games will continue to be necessary. We encourage consumers to let their politicians know that they support an R18+ rating for games."

Prodigy Song In GTAIV

Wednesday 9 April 2008 | Post a comment

English electronic music group, Prodigy, now has has one of their songs in GTAIV.

"Dirty New Yorker" one of the songs from the H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 sessions will be featured on the Grand Theft Auto IV game and soundtrack. Prodigy removed the song, featuring Mobb Deep member Havoc, from the H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 album so "Dirty New Yorker" could be placed on the latest game in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The video for "Dirty New Yorker" has been added to H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 as a bonus feature on the album.

Prodigy, one of hip hop's legendary lyricists said, "I am proud to be able to provide a lyrical picture which defines the grittiness and lawlessness in Liberty City, the latest city exposed in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. My music provides a harsh reality to the surroundings the game portrays."

New Info in CVG article

Monday 7 April 2008 | Post a comment

Gaming website ComputerAndVideoGames.com has posted info about their experience with GTAIV's Liberty City. Info includes:

" * Mini-games confirmed for GTA IV include pool, basketball, darts, golfing at driving ranges and arcade games, such as Go Go Space Monkey, which was also featured in San Andreas.
* The trucking company from San Andreas, RS Haul, returns and missions based around the company have returned as well.
* 'Gruppe Sechs' securicars have returned and players are able to steal them and deliver them to locations for a reward, but this task is said to be much trickier than in previous games.
* The game features many references to 'Crackdown,' a GTA-style game available for the Xbox 360 which also uses RenderWare, GTA's previous engine.
* Vehicles such as the Stallion and Comet from previous games appear in IV, as well as the NRG500, a motorcycle. A new motorcycle called the NHG900RR is also confirmed to be in the game and is rumored to be the fastest one available.
* GTA IV contains photos of Vice City, similar to the maps found scattered around San Andreas. References to previous GTA games through graffiti is also spread throughout the city.
* Binco, Burger Shot, 24-7 and Clucking Bell are all returning, in addition to many other brands from previous GTA games. 'Alderney' features several strip malls where you can purchase food, clothing, and more.
* New York City-style news tickers on buildings will be constantly updated based on what crimes you commit in the game.
* There are several innuendos and references to the Hot Coffee mod for San Andreas.
* As previously mentioned, pedestrian actions will be incredibly varied and detailed compared to previous games.
* "Flushing Meadows (site of the NY World's Fair) is featured in its entirety, as is a recreation of theme park Astroland at Coney Island. Rides such as the Corpse Ride and Cyclone can be tested, and the major tourist spots will play a part in some missions."
* Sprunk can be purchased, as in San Andreas, to replenish your health.
* Similarly to Saints Row, yet another GTA-style sandbox game, phone numbers are scattered throughout the city and you can call them for whatever services they entail.
* A place called the Videogeddon Arcade allows you to play arcade games and posters attacking violent video games can be seen.
* The 'sky tram' featured on the box-art for GTA IV can actually be used as a mode of transportation, although it costs money as do the taxis."

The first ever Grand Theft Auto IV in-game screenshots were released, this time, courtesy of the latest issue of thee ZOO! magazine. The first one show Niko Bellic on foot, while the second one shows the player in a vehicle.

As mentioned before, we can see from these two pictures that the HUD is dynamic, and certain aspects of it will only be displayed when activated, while the health and armor meters represented by semicircles around the perimeter of the radar.

Well, many of you wished for in-game screenshots of Grand Theft Auto IV. So, here they are! Savour the pictures (click to enlarge them, don’t forget to save them to your hard drive!) Thanks to GTAGaming for the screenshots, have fun!

71 Screencaps

Friday 28 March 2008 | Post a comment

Our partner site GTA4.tv has posted 71 screencaps of the new trailer! Be sure and check it out.

"You've enjoyed the video, now enjoy examining the screencaps. We took a bit more time over these captures than we would have previously because the video compression had corrupted some of the frames of the video. You won't have noticed it when watching the trailer, but as screencaps, some of them were just very poor quality. Luckily, being the nice guys that we are, we spent a few extra hours touching up the poorer screenshots so you won't notice too much wrong with any of them. Most of them look like actual screenshots. You can check them out in the Image Gallery, or jump onto the Screencaps page to view our final update from the final trailer before the game's release."

Rockstar + Amazon = Downloadable Songs!

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post a comment

An ambitious announcement has been made detailing a partnership between Rockstar games and internet giant Amazon. Yahoo has an article explaining what exactly this means. Here is the highlight of the article:

"Advertised throughout Liberty City, the cheekily-named "ZiT" technology is built into the game's mobile phone interface system. As players cruise around the world listening to the in-game radio, they can at any point 'mark' a song by opening their phone and dialing the number ZIT-555-0100. Gamers will then receive a text message with the song and artist names, and if they're registered at the forthcoming Rockstar Games Social Club community site, they'll find an e-mail waiting in their inbox with a direct link to a custom playlist on Amazon.com. All songs tagged "ZiT" will be stored here, available for preview and purchase at Amazon's going rate of $.89-$.99 per track. Best of all, those MP3s are free of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations imposed on files downloaded through Apple's iTunes store and thus can be imported into any computer or digital device with no constraints."

Excellent idea. But if your one of those Limewire or Torrent users your luck has just ran out as Rockstar have stated that None of those tracks, however, are accessible outside the game.

Rockstar Games Social Club Revealed

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post a comment

It seems that "Game 3.0" is really happening. Rockstar have just announced Rockstar Social Club. On April 15th you can sign up with a Playstation Network ID/Xbox Live Gamercard and share your stats and more! Here is the full list of features:

* LCPD Police Blotter - A virtual map and tracker of single-player criminal activity logged in Liberty City from the aggregated data of millions of connected players - showing the most dangerous areas of town, most commonly used weapons and more.

* The Story Gang - This special single-player leaderboard recognizes players who complete Niko Bellic's main story arc of Grand Theft Auto IV - The leaderboard ranks players according to the total amount of playing time it's taken to complete the story, as well as a historical rank by who has completed it first. Members of this club will receive special online widgets and merit badges marking all of their in-game accomplishments.

* The 100% Club - Watch to see who will be the first to complete 100% of the game. The first ten people to be identified on the Social Club as reaching 100% will be sent an ultra-rare commemorative 'key to the city' to mark their accomplishment. In the future, the 100% Club will then carry a historical leaderboard showing rankings of who has completed 100% of a game in the shortest span of playing hours.

* The Hall of Fame -- This area will dynamically recognize those singularly elite players who have reached the top of the hill on various statistical leaderboards, and will also contain a personal awards display of special in-game landmarks and successes in Social Club competitions.

* The Liberty City Marathon -- A ranking of special physical milestones achieved in the game - from the amount of miles walked, driven, or swam - to the number of bullets fired and stunt-jumps jumped. There will be additional special marathon-based competitions in the future from this area as well.

Final trailer, tonight at 10pm

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post a comment

Check out what CVG is reporting:

" Yes, it's really, nearly out - and Rockstar is fanfaring the final weeks before GTA IV's debut with the launch of the final trailer, which will be hitting electronic wires tonight.

"Good Lord, What Are You Doing?" aka "Everyone's a Rat" will be rolled out on the internet and (presumably, as all the other trailers have) Xbox Live Marketplace at 10pm tonight, so there's something to look forward to when you roll out of the pub having spent the very last of this month's wages.

We've no idea what to expect from the video, though surely Rockstar has gotten bored of shouty cut-scenes by now. Perhaps, seeming as it's currently the flavour of magazine land, we'll get to see some footage of multiplayer in action - but frankly we're not holding our breath."

Info Summary

Tuesday 25 March 2008 | Post a comment

-=}{oT~dEv1L 666's blog has posted a nice summary of information on a few updates and what is expected this week, check it out below.

"Well, there has been two minor updates this week on Grand Theft Auto IV, and I thought it would be a great idea to sum up all the points we have missed or left out in previous posts into one post. Not to worry, nothing will be missed out on our Grand Theft Auto IV coverage!

Also, we have got you guys a special Grand Theft Auto video treat - a professionally-done San Andreas fan-made film, named “It’s Been Good”. Set to the tunes of The Who’s Baba O’Riley, it features top-notch editing and professionally choreographed San Andreas footage from every angle imaginable. You can give it a look here, it’s simply breathtaking!

Also, back to the point, it seems that the ‘Weazel News’ widget from the official Grand Theft Auto IV site has been updated, as well as a voice actor being confirmed for Grand Theft Auto IV. First and foremost, let’s touch on the ‘Weazel News’ widget update. Nothing really new, but there’s standard Rockstar Games humor, and a Grand Theft Auto IV screenshot thumbnail that’s really too small to see anything.

Deputy Mayor Bryce Dawkins announced today that his new Family Values Task Force has fined numerous adult stores in the area for failing to remove a recently banned polyhedral sex toy, claiming that MMORPG games, board games and online teen chat rooms lead to trouble.

Plus, the latest KING Magazine contains a one-page long article which reveals about Sean A. Malcolm and his part in Grand Theft Auto IV as a minor voice actor. Playing the part of a “Jamaican rude bwoy looking down the barrel of the gun,” Malcolm was asked to recite lines such as “Don’t shoot! Me nah wah die!”.

There’s really nothing more, however. Don’t forget that there will be a final Grand Theft Auto IV trailer to be released two days from now! But before you go, do remember to leave a comment! GTA IV Rated Mature by ESRB

Thursday 20 March 2008 | Post a comment

With just a little bit below 40 days to go before the release date, it seems the ESRB has just rated Grand Theft Auto IV. It was really expected, given the fact that every Grand Theft Auto game since the first one has been rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB. This means that citizens in the United States can only play Grand Theft Auto IV if they are 17 years or older.

The reasons for the “M” for Mature rating, given by the ESRB was as such: Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, Blood, Intense Violence.

The Making Of GTAIV

Monday 17 March 2008 | Post a comment

Next-Gen.biz has posted a great article about the making of GTAIV.

"And so the biggest GTA project to date hoves into view. Not the biggest in geographical terms, but certainly in every other respect. Rockstar embarked on it with a mixture of trepidation, determination and, as was to be expected by now, the desire to shake things up a bit.

"When we set out for this game it was, again, ‘Oh my god, following up San Andreas is a nightmare’," explains Houser. "A good nightmare, but a nightmare. And then with the new hardware it set a new kind of expectation: people are really going to expect something bloody cool and very progressive and very evolved from anything that’s gone before in a big way. So we had a lot of discussions about where to set it, but a more realistic Liberty City very quickly became the favourite option. For a lot of reasons, it just works – it works physically and it also works in terms of vibe. There are a lot of different energies going on here in a small area so you can get away with it – it won’t be weird, or forced, or phoney.

“When we were looking at the lead character we felt that a lot of the Italian American and traditional east coast gangster themes had been a little bit played out – a little bit hammered, actually…"

Houser isn’t referencing any other game by name, but we’re assuming he must have had at least a session or two with Saints Row (probably the most cynically derivative game of modern times, it should be said) in the process of reaching these conclusions, which have resulted in a vibe for GTA IV that, at least from the outset, feels markedly different."

"German magazines MAN!AC and GamePro have new previews of GTA IV in their latest (April) editions. Most of the information is old, but they did manage to reveal that there is a radio station in the game called Beat 102.7, which is certainly new to us."

I seems that someone has left a digitalized screenshot over at GrandTheftAuto4.net. You may recognize it from the Spanish pre-order box containing two new screenshots we covered a few weeks ago.

It basically shows Niko Bellic being arrested by the LCPD. Credits to GTA4.net for the heads up and the screenshot. Enjoy!

We posted Stephen Totilos' hands on preview in a previous post, but forgot to mention two key features, slow motion driving and days of the week.

"Days Of The Week - “GTA IV” has days of the week. It doesn’t have seasons. It doesn’t have months. But this cutting-edge power-house of a game has days of the week. All seven? Unconfirmed. But I can report it has Thursdays and Saturdays. Let’s assume it has the other five as well.

I discovered this while pausing a two-week-old build of the Xbox 360 version of the game and spotting the word “Thursday” near the map. I asked the Rockstar PR rep who was overseeing my session to explain what exactly this could mean. He told me about a mission called “The Final Interview,” in which the game’s protagonist, Niko Bellic, will need to assassinate a lawyer. Niko will be able to apply for a job at the firm from the game’s Internet cafes, but will only be called in for an interview on a Saturday. That’s when Niko can show up and take care of business. On any other day of the week he won’t have access.

Now don’t you worry, “GTA” has not gone all “Animal Crossing” on you. You won’t need to wait until an actual Saturday or start tinkering with your console’s internal calendar. The days change in the game with the sunrises an sunsets that the series has had for years.

What more will be done with the days of the week? I don’t know. But I’m sure you can dream up plenty of possibilities: Niko going to a football game on Sunday, getting his laundry picked up on Wednesday, watching his favorite TV shows on a Tuesday. Actually, let’s hope for none of that.

Slow-Mo Driving- You can drive slowly in “GTA,” even while driving fast. Yes, indeed, the laws of time and space need not apply as the game will borrow a little from “Max Payne” or “Burnout” and let you drive in slow-motion. I learned this near the end of my demo as I drove a Hummer-like truck through part of “GTA IV”’s Manhattan stand-in, Algonquin. The Rockstar rep suggested that I hold down the B button on my 360 controller. This changed the camera view to an elevated, cinematic perspective. I could still drive in this camera view.

While driving from a cinematic perspective I was then encouraged to click the 360 controller’s left thumbstick. This slowed things down. I was thinking of “Burnout”’s after-touch system and stopped directing my truck. But the Rockstar rep told me I could keep driving. It was a little awkward to steer with the left stick while keeping it clicked in, but it seemed manageable.

I’m not sure why this feature was added. It seems to go against the vibe that I reported in my piece today of Rockstar making “GTA IV” feel less like a game than the “GTA” predecessors. But it will allow the game to be viewed in a more stylish, cinematic context.

I did not have a chance to test the limits of the slow-mo driving, to see if it would help during a high-speed chase or make me more capable of landing a stunt jump. But those seem like safe bets.

After I saw those two features I played the PS3 version of the game and flew a helicopter. But you read about that already. Didn’t you?

***

What more do you want to know about “GTA IV”? I played it for two hours, but I certainly didn’t see it all."

Take-Two Urges Shareholders To Withhold Action

Thursday 13 March 2008 | Post a comment

Following EA's hostile move to purchase outstanding shares at its original $26 per share, Take-Two has released a statement urging shareholders to withhold action until the publisher can review and consider the proposal over the next two weeks.

Take-Two has repeatedly and firmly stated that EA's offer undervalues the company and its portfolio of original IP, and the actions it has taken in recent months to turn the company's operations around.

In its statement, Take-Two says it will be consulting with independent financial and legal advisors -- Bear Starns and Lehman Brothers on the financial side, and Proskauer Rose LLP on the legal side -- on the latest EA move.

The company then says that within 10 business days, it will "advise Take-Two’s stockholders of the Board’s position regarding the offer as well as its reasons for that position."

GTAIV Release to hurt Iron Man Movie?

Thursday 13 March 2008 | Comments [ 1 ]

An industry analyst has suggested the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto IV may disrupt the theatrical release of the Hollywood blockbuster Iron Man, which will occur just a few days later.

Mike Hickey of Janco Partners said Take-Two's long-awaited game, which will hit shelves on April 29, could negatively impact ticket sales for Iron Man, which opens on May 2. The runaway success of Halo 3 in September was blamed by some Hollywood executives for poor box office numbers that month.

"The last significant videogame release, Halo 3, generated over $300 million in sales from its first week in the market," Hickey said in a Next-Gen report. "Halo 3 was released on just one platform, the Xbox 360, and attached nearly 50 percent of the installed base. GTA IV will be released on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, which have both significantly increased their installed bases since the release of Halo 3.

A GTA IV 25 percent attached rate to a combined Xbox 360 and PS3 installed base at its April 29 release would imply 5.8 million units sold or roughly $360 million in retail sales in the first week of the game's release."

Houser chats about GTAIV Episodes

Thursday 13 March 2008 | Post a comment

Sam Houser has talked a little bit about what might be some of the downloadable XBOX360 content.

"In the game, you might be walking around and then someone will come up to you and say something like, 'Hey, I need your help', and you'll be like, 'What? this isn't a story mission', and he'll be like, 'You see that room up there? That's my wife and she's f****** some bloke, and I need you to go and do...' and this little story will unfold from there just randomly," he explained to Edge magazine.

The opportunity for things like that I would say is enormous. Really, though, for the downloadable content in general, it's about seeing how people get turned on by the game, and then we will tailor the production. We are very tuned into the reactions of the audience and we will go a certain way or another."

Sam also stated that the episodes would be "pretty deep, offering another full-on adventure in this world" and that "you'll get a lot of content for your money", just as you should do with a boxed game.

MTV had a chance to get there hands on GTAIV on Wednesday, check out what they had to say.

On Wednesday morning at the headquarters of Rockstar Games, we took Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers in hand and spent two hours with "Grand Theft Auto IV," trying both. The result: a better understanding of what "GTA" rendered on cutting-edge video game hardware feels like and how it might impact fans and nonfans of the series in a whole new way.

"Grand Theft Auto IV" is only six weeks away from release, but only recently have the developers at Rockstar let reporters get their hands on the game. During MTV News' session, we explored the depths of the game's missions and the randomness of simulated city life that makes every tour of a Rockstar gaming metropolis a sandstorm of surprises.

User Posted image

We flew helicopters, we returned an in-game text message on our cell phone, we crashed lots of cars, we wondered if the game's version of the Statue of Liberty was supposed to look like Hilary Clinton (not intentional, Rockstar says), and we earned a five-star wanted rating on the series' newly expanded six-star police-alertness meter.

First we followed rules, or at least tried to. A Rockstar rep working the MTV News demo turned the lights out and loaded a two-week-old build of the Xbox 360 version of the game, displaying it on a large flat-panel TV. He used a developer cheat to warp the game's protagonist, immigrant Niko Bellic, to a mission called "Jamaican Heat." This mission is available early in the game and involves Bellic escorting a gun dealing Rastafarian named Little Jacob to a drug deal gone bad.

User Posted image

These "GTA" games are certainly still not for kids. Little Jacob names the drugs he likes. The game's improved aiming controls offer smooth, precise techniques for shooting enemies in any body part. The radio stations still lampoon current events and skewer sacred cows. As ever, "GTA" is a crime story, unapologetically profane, irreverently sarcastic.

Following the rules had us pursuing a few more "GTA IV" missions, one involving a shoot-out in a brownstone in the game's stand-in for Brooklyn, another a shoot-out at a dock, and another that wasn't a shoot-out. This last mission, named "Call and Collect," featured Niko helping a dirty cop by shaking down a blackmailer. We did this — almost — without firing a shot, relying instead on the power of cell phone technology. The blackmailer was hanging out near a fountain in a small park, though the game didn't indicate exactly which person milling about in that area was him. Instead, Niko received a text message on his ever-available cell phone. With a few presses of the controller, we could call the texted number, causing the blackmailer's phone to ring. Once the call commenced, the goal was to walk Niko through a crowd of people, looking and listening for someone talking on their cell phone. We heard him first and eventually stood face to face, with Niko's and the blackmailer's phones to their ears, their voices echoing through the phones and the virtual thin air. The blackmailer almost ran. Niko's gun stopped him. And then Niko ran from the cops. Mission just about complete.

According to an exclusive from KING magazine, DJ Green Lantern will be a DJ in GTA IV. Also some other important points to note:

"-Somebody within my camp said that they were interested in doing some stuff. We sat down and it ended up like a whole radio show. This particular sow, there's a little bit of budget involved. It's not the normal licensed-out music. When you jump in the car, you're going to be able to hear a whole Green Lantern radio show filled with nothing but exclusive music I produced for the game. I think it's the first time that's ever been done."
-I'll just say the radio show is exciting. It's going to get your adrenaline pumping. I can't say any more.
-Music from Styles P, Uncle Murda and Maino's song "Getaway Driver" are included in the game."
