Steam, Valve’s download service, has been picking up…city crims, in the form of the Grand Theft Auto 3 Trilogy.

GTA1 & 2 have been available to download for years, but it would be quite the gift from Rockstar to get these more recent titles.

However, the release of the GTA trilogy isn’t yet certain. The games have only had a phantom appearance on Steam, with $0 price tag. Unlike their predecessors we doubt they’ll be free.

With GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas on Steam, what could come after that but the next generation sequel, Grand Theft Auto 4? If such a release is in the pipeline, we expect it would only be a year or so after the initial console release.

Target stores are now giving away free system wraps to Xbox 360 and PS3 owners when they pre-order GTA IV. These wraps are basically pieces you stick to your system to give it a customized exterior look, kinda like the Dell face stickers that they put on, except you do it yourself. These wraps come in black with the GTA IV logo on it. Check out your closest Target store for more info on this.

Speculation has flooded the Internet recently about the possibility of Rockstar Games releasing even more exclusive episodic content for the Xbox 360. This was seen by many as a definite killer for the PlayStation 3 version, but it is now clear that Rockstar Games plans to not go further than their two pieces of exclusive episodic content for Microsoft’s console.

Conjecture started when executives from the Take-Two conference call added that GTA IV would feature new episodic content in 2009. Ending the confusion, Rockstar has come out to disclaim the rumors by saying that they do not attend to release further episodic content beyond their already two confirmed pieces for the 360.

While this news may come as closure, it paints a clear image that Sony needs to be very aggressive this generation as succeeding on name alone is not enough to suffice consumers this time around. It is reported that Microsoft paid USD 50 million to ensure that they get the downloadable content exclusively for the Xbox 360.

In the end, hopefully this will not allow for the PS3 version to suffer in sales over its 360 counterpart. While graphics ran the industry in the 90s, today it is more so about what console has the more exclusive content. Hopefully Sony in the future will not allow such avenues to be explored by competitors.

Senior industry sources reveal massive title will miss Easter release period

MCV understands that Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV will NOT be released in March as expected – and will in fact be held back until the last week in April.

Sources close to the game’s publisher have told MCV that the title’s UK release will miss the Easter period entirely, and will instead go on sale in the final week of Rockstar parent Take 2’s second financial quarter.

That would be in keeping with the company's latest financial statement, which revealed the title would be released in its Q2 period – which runs from February to the end of April.

A Rockstar spokesperson told MCV that the publisher didn’t comment on ‘rumour and speculation’.

If true, the rest of the market will breathe a huge sigh of relief – as they can enjoy the lucrative Easter period without doing battle with one of the biggest releases in recent years.

The news has certainly come as a surprise to the trade. One prominent member of the channel told MCV:

“The last I heard about GTA IV’s release was a couple of months ago, when all the changes were taking place at Take 2’s UK offices. Since then, they’ve gone a bit quiet on what’s going on with GTA IV.

“The way Take 2 work on GTA has always been very secretive. I’d expect some more concrete news from them two or three weeks before release.”

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today announced financial results for its fourth quarter and fiscal year ended October 31, 2007.

Net revenue for the fourth quarter was $292.6 million, compared to $266.6 million for the same period of fiscal 2006. Fourth quarter sales were led by BioShock, NBA 2K8 and Carnival Games, all of which were new titles released this quarter, as well as Grand Theft Auto catalog titles. Distribution revenue rose year over year, as next generation hardware sales were fueled by the strength of new front-line software titles, along with robust demand for Wii products.

Net loss for the fourth quarter was $7.1 million or $0.10 per share, compared to a net loss of $14.0 million or $0.20 per share in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006.

The fourth quarter 2007 results include $4.8 million in stock-based compensation expenses ($0.06 per share); $4.5 million in business reorganization costs ($0.06 per share), including a $3.1 million loss related to the sale of Joytech ($0.04 per share); and $1.5 million in expenses related to unusual legal matters ($0.02 per share). Results for the fourth quarter of 2006 included $6.8 million in stock-based compensation expenses ($0.08 per share); $5.5 million in expenses related to unusual legal matters ($0.06 per share); and $2.3 million in expenses primarily related to studio closures ($0.03 per share).

Non-GAAP net income was $3.4 million or $0.05 per share in the fourth quarter of 2007, compared to a net loss of $1.8 million or $0.03 per share in the fourth quarter of 2006. Take-Two Interactive has today announced the formation of 2K Marin, a new development studio located in California.

The studio, which joins existing studios in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America, will focus on the development of original intellectual property, but will also work with other 2K studios on collaborative projects.

"We're focused on continuing to bring new brands and cutting-edge gameplay to market with the creation of the 2K Marin studio," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "2K Marin will build upon our success in creating and leveraging AAA franchises."

Rumours surrounding the release date of Grand Theft Auto 4 have been sparked today after semi official Sony blog Threespeech stated that the game would be released in September or October 2008. This is some months later than the officially announced release period of February-April 2008.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, a Rockstar representative has stated that the game is still on track for release during the second quarter of the publisher's financial year, meaning February 1 through April 30, 2008.

GTA 4 has received the MA 15+ rating by the OFLC in Australia, which means it is "not suitable for people under 15, and under 15s must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian." The game therefore contains "Strong violence, Strong coarse language, Drug and sexual references." . The date of classification was December 11, 2007.
