EA To Own Take-Two By August

Thursday 31 July 2008 | Post A Comment

In the business side of gaming, CitiGroup financial has confirmed that it believes EA could take control of Take-Two Interactive, publisher of Grand Theft Auto IV, as early as late August. Take-Two has been involved in a bidding war between EA and Microsoft, both of which would like to purchase the firm. While nothing has been confirmed yet, we will keep you posted as this unfolds.
"“We expect FTC approval in August and for ERTS to raise its bid slightly upon approval to $27-$28 in order to potentially seal a deal in time for holiday season GTA orders,” Thill said.

However, if Take-Two refuses the bid, Thill believes that Electronic Arts “walk as the near-term economics to ERTS of a deal would deteriorate.”

It’s at least more plausible than Microsoft, especially if Electronic Arts were to raise their bid from the $25 it first offered to $28, who knows? We’ll keep you updated."

Grand Theft Auto To Hit Wii 2009

Thursday 24 July 2008 | Post A Comment

More of a rumor than a fact, Grand Theft Auto is now expected to hit the Wii sometime in the fall of 2009. While nothing has been confirmed by Take Two, the news comes from Impact Virtual, a french gaming site. Google did its best to translate the website, and if you can figure out exactly what's going on below, more power to you.

"After spending a few phone calls, sent a few heads and uttered standard kind of family threats, it would seem that yes, an episode of GTA on Wii is already on track.

The game could use the engine GTA San Andreas PS2, given the sauce Wii. Finally, even if at this level, it takes more than Ms. Irma that the true forecast, the game could be announced next spring for an exit at the end of 2009. "

GTA IV Trailer 1 recreated in-game!

Thursday 10 July 2008 | Post A Comment

Brotha, the formidable Grand Theft Auto fan known for his productions such as Grand Theft Auto IV trailer re-creations in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, has come out with yet another trailer re-creation for Grand Theft Auto IV.

However, it’s a little bit different this time. He has taken on the task of re-filming the whole of Grand Theft Auto IV’s first trailer, this time in Grand Theft Auto IV itself. Although it is filmed with a camera shooting at the TV with no time-lapse effects like the original trailer, it is quite an amazing feat, I shall say.

The camera angles, audio, locations and everything else matches up very well with Grand Theft Auto IV’s original first trailer. Such an amazing feat should not be missed, so while you’re sitting on your couch with a controller waiting for something big happening over at this year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), why not give this video a go?

Judge says Jack Thompson is guilty

Wednesday 21 May 2008 | Post A Comment

This article was posted over at Joystiq yesterday. Looks like Jack Thompson is finally getting what he deserves.

"We're not going to make jokes on this one and save the snark until the final ruling, but the judge presiding over self-proclaimed anti-games activist Jack Thompson's Florida Bar trial has recommended the attorney be found guilty on 27 of the 31 misconduct charges – 21 from the Devin Moore case, 4 when in 2006 he tried to declare Bully a public nuisance, and 2 unrelated to video games.

Game Politics has the full story and a list of some of the charges, including "Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation" and "Making statements that the lawyer knows to be false or with reckless disregard as to the truth or falsity concerning the qualifications or integrity of a judge." A disciplinary hearing is being held June 4. The full report to the Florida Supreme Court is due September 2."

The Game Politics link above has a lot more details, but at this time the link appears to be dead - likely due to being overloaded.

Xbox comes out on top in GTA 4 sales

Thursday 1 May 2008 | Post A Comment

I found this nice little article over at ElectronicPig.tv, check it out below!

"Got Grand Theft Auto IV yet? On which console? Chances are it’ll be on an Xbox 360, since the system has out-sold the PS3 in the first day of GTA IV hitting the shelves.

Chart-Track is reporting that 55% of the 609,000 copies shifted on day one went to the Xbox, while the PS3 hoovered up the remaining 45%.

The figures show GTA 4 is already a massive hit, selling more than its predecessor Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and putting it well on track to be the biggest game of the year.

It’s currently in short supply across the country too, so if you haven’t got your mitts on a copy yet, you might have to hunt around. As usual, eBay is packed full of copies, but our advice is to hold out, as new shipments are arriving in stores all the time."

"Just under 300 pages containing all the info you'll need to fully clock Rockstar's masterpiece.

The guide also includes a bonus giant fold out map of Liberty City, which when turned over becomes a poster.

GTA 4's Production Budget Estimated at $100M

Wednesday 30 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Check out what ShackNews is reporting:

"Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies revealed in an interview that the recently released Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) had a budget of roughly $100 million, marking the title as the most costly development of any game to date.

GTA IV's massive budget pins the title above the previous front-runner Shenmue, released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and costing an unprecedented $70 million to produce.

"It's like making a theatre production, a few movies and an album all to fit into one package," Benzies told the Times Online.

Benzies also noted that about 1,000 people pitched in on the game's development. Beyond the expected tasks of programming and design, Rockstar also set up time-lapse cameras on New York rooftops to capture the correct intensity of the rain, and took over 100,000 photographs on location to piece together Liberty City.

"We're constantly competing against ourselves," says Benzies. "If something isn't exactly right, it comes out of the game or gets fixed."

Problems with GTA4

Tuesday 29 April 2008 | Post A Comment

A post recently made at Level2Gaming describes some of the bugs found associated with GTA4 and the respective consoles.

""

For many folks, April 29th (today) has been a different day. With the release of GTAIV, many folks have finally been able to get their hands on one of the most anticipated games in a long time. Now that a few hours have passed and most are playing the game, many people are having mixed feelings. For most of the fans out there, their "minds were blown" when they finally got to play the game. Many were overly impressed and could not express the joy they had. However others were slightly disappointed due to a few hitches. Also as a side note, Rockstar's Social Club is now fully functional with their own gamertag giving people a chance to show off their progress etc.

Positives

* Exceptional Graphics
* Excellent Physics Engine
* Great Music
* Fun Missions
* Numerous other features ...too many to mention
* No Region Lock for Multiplayer

GTA forum boards across the world have been on fire with members posting their progress and questions about the game. However a number of PS3 fans are having a couple of problems.

* Freezing Errors - Seems folks with the 60GB PS3 were having many freezing errors when installing the Special Edition of GTAIV...many reports are coming in claiming that this problem is occurring. A few Xbox 360 fans also complained of lock ups but the spot light really focuses on PS3 folks. Rockstar officials have been aware of the 60GB freezing problem and recommended that folks upgrade to the 80GB. WTF?

" My best bit of advice for you would be to upgrade to the 80 GB version of the PS3"
For a few 360 fans are complaining that the game is freezing every hour or so and they have to end up restarting the system (seems a problem with the disc drive is finally showing its flaws).

* PS3 Network Connection Problems - Many PS3 fans experienced network connection problems today, getting the this error:

" Cannot connect to game provider, please try again."

We just assume this is a network overload problem. I am not sure if the problem has been fixed now but I will try my best to find out.

* Graphical Problems - A few 360 fans are noticing botched and inaccurate shadowing of some images, even on 1080p settings.

These are just the initial reports and I would like to hear your views about the game so far. I personally will not be getting it for a while so I'll just be listening in the mean time. Otherwise have fun.

Game Leaked over the internet + 34 new screens!

Thursday 24 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Yes, Grand Theft Auto IV has been leaked over the internet. Torrent sites are already posting downloads of the Xbox 360 game, and leaked videos of the intro cutscene and gameplay has surfaced.

So far, it looks great. The game, as expected, looks better on your Game Console than on trailers or screenhots. The trees don't look as ugly as in screenhots, apparently. The graphics are also superb. I shan't reveal more, though.

34 new screens and many interviews and articles have also emerged, click here for the full stories: 24 New Screens + IGN/1up interviews, Special Edition images + many interviews/reviews + 10 screens. Enjoy!

Aaron Garbut Interviewed

Monday 21 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Aaron Garbut, the Art Director at Rockstar North, has recently been interviewed by IGN and EuroGamer. Plus, Twenty brand new Screenshots of Grand Theft Auto IV, including an artwork of Mallorie, has been released by IGN, 1up and EuroGamer.

Also, 20 screenshots and one new artwork was released, click here to view them!

This is what he had to say:
We never reproduce real world locations. We take interesting or representative elements and create something new from them. It’s about taking inspiration from real places and producing something that captures the essence of it. We’re trying to take our impression of New York and keep it as that, an impression, not a laboured reproduction.”

“I think the level of detail the cut-scene guys have achieved is intense. They have the characters interacting with the world, which is hard enough, but they also have added a lot of feedback onto the world. […] Things like pillows and mattresses bending or bouncing a little under the weight of characters sitting on it, phone cords dangling and following the phones movements, liquid moving around in glasses. It’s pretty amazing.”

“There are no hard limitations on the number of active dynamic lights around the player. The real-time shadows are working across every object and surface in the game with everything self-shadowing and casting onto everything else, there’s ambient occlusion and emissive lighting on top of that. And then your standard next-gen shenanigans - light shafts, bloom, depth of field and motion blur, and of course it goes without saying everything’s rendered with HDR.”

Variety's Dan Houser Interview

Monday 21 April 2008 | Post A Comment

has recently sat down with Rockstar Games’ Vice President of Creative, Dan Houser. Ben Fritz, the interviewer, has compiled an Interview, which discusses the Grand Theft Auto series, specifically Grand Theft Auto IV.

Here's a Summary:
-Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas focused on removing restrictions, while Grand Theft Auto IV focuses ore on implementing things that make sense for the location or for the character.
-In GTA IV, Rockstar aims to recreate the feeling of jumping from GTA 2 to GTA III. It’s not just an improvement; it’s something completely different. GTA 2 to GTA III was a graphical revamp; GTA III to GTA IV is a phenomenal increase in detail (in story, character, city and relationships).
-The Euphoria physics in GTA IV make the game feel more alive; greatly improved graphics make emotions easier to convey. It’s all about making the game more natural.
-The story reflects the gameplay. The more realistic the game looks and feels, the more realistic the story can be.
-Rockstar [Games]’s dream with their games is to always make everything a flowing, completely integrated experience.
-The development process for GTA IV was professional yet unstructured. The team hasn’t really changed since GTA 3, so the process is largely intuitive.
-The original Liberty City (from GTA III) was never meant to imitate New York City; it was just “vaguely East Coast-ish”, as said before in earlier interviews.
-As with previous Grand Theft Auto titles, extensive research was done to capture the true essence of New York City.
-When coming up with the concept of Niko, Rockstar wanted someone that was tough yet foreign; he’s both battle-hardened and innocent at the same time.
-It took approximately six months to come up with a rough design of what represents New York City. Actually building that representation of New York (Liberty City, in this case) took years to complete.
-As the city is created, the story begins to develop with Dan bouncing ideas off of Sam and Leslie Benzies. The story begins to be developed, artists start to work on the characters, and the designers begin to break down the story into missions.
-Developing the actual Grand Theft Auto experience is a daunting task; although the game isn’t linear, Rockstar sets it up in such a way that any given situation is predetermined. From the article: “We know where you can move around the map. We know when you can unlock everything. So although the thing to you playing game is non-linear because at any point you might have 15 things you can do, we can track on a huge multi-tiered doc, where you can be. So we know at that point can’t see other things. We’re trying to tell a story, design a videogame and take you on a trip around the world all at the same time.“
-While San Andreas and Vice City took much influence from films, GTA IV does not. With the Rockstar team being based in New York City (and much of the team having lived there their entire lives), it makes more sense to base the game off of their own first-hand knowledge and experience of the city.
-The main reason that we haven’t seen multiplayer Grand Theft Auto in the past is technical limitations; the hardware just couldn’t handle the strain that a full GTA multiplayer experience would dish out.
-For GTA IV, the multiplayer experience isn’t meant to be revolutionary or completely innovative; it’s simply meant to be the best multiplayer GTA experience possible.
Multiplayer recreates moments while singleplayer creates narrative; it’s all a very cinematic experience.
The storytelling experience in GTA IV is far beyond anything we’ve seen in any Grand Theft Auto title to date.
When we look at Niko’s situation in GTA IV, we see him as a serious individual with problems that he most overcome; the world that he’s stuck in, and the issues of those around Niko, are considerably ridiculous by comparison. It’s this tone that defines the game.

Here for the interview: LINK

PSM3 Review

Sunday 20 April 2008 | Post A Comment

French gaming magazine PSM3 is the latest in an ever-growing list of media outlets that has been invited to (p)review GTA4. The key points from their article are below - be aware that there is a possible spoiler so you may want to be careful when reading these.

- The use of L2 & R2 for braking and accelerating is confirmed.
- The game supposedly "looks great at 1080p".
- You can use the underground metro/subway system to get around the city.
- A weapon shop has been confirmed to be in the game.
- Packie is Irish.
- *Possible Spoiler*: One mission involves robbing a bank. Police and SWAT teams are after you after the heist and you must escape through the underground metro system.
- When you purchase clothes, you click on the item and you try it out straight away; there are none of the unbearable loading times from San Andreas.
- Pay 'n' Spray's are confirmed but only to change your car paint. They won't affect your star rating.
- There are some problems with the aiming system - Niko sometimes feels 'heavy' while moving and the A.I. can be dumb at times, but this is barely noticeable and fairly excusable considering the scale and the complexity of the environment around you.
- Best game ever made.

Score given: 20/20

Rockstar's Take on Australian Rating Edits

Thursday 10 April 2008 | Post A Comment

A few days ago, Rockstar announced they made an edited version to meet the Australian's review board of requirements. They have finally commented on the whats and whys of this move.

"The Australian version of Grand Theft Auto IV was rated by the OFLC in December 2007 as MA15+. Unlike the US and Europe, Australia still lacks an R18+ rating for video games and as a result many games are edited for release in Australia, including most previous Grand Theft Auto releases.

While there are some minor differences between the Australian and US/EU versions, they are not significant and we do not believe they take away from the level of scope and detail that make GTA IV such an incredible experience. We would not release the game in Australia if we believed these differences compromised the quality of the game in any way.

We strongly support the OLFC and will continue to work within their guidelines; however we believe the government needs to bring games in line with other media by introducing an R18+ rating, or edits to games will continue to be necessary. We encourage consumers to let their politicians know that they support an R18+ rating for games."

Prodigy Song In GTAIV

Wednesday 9 April 2008 | Post A Comment

English electronic music group, Prodigy, now has has one of their songs in GTAIV.

"Dirty New Yorker" one of the songs from the H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 sessions will be featured on the Grand Theft Auto IV game and soundtrack. Prodigy removed the song, featuring Mobb Deep member Havoc, from the H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 album so "Dirty New Yorker" could be placed on the latest game in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The video for "Dirty New Yorker" has been added to H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 as a bonus feature on the album.

Prodigy, one of hip hop's legendary lyricists said, "I am proud to be able to provide a lyrical picture which defines the grittiness and lawlessness in Liberty City, the latest city exposed in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. My music provides a harsh reality to the surroundings the game portrays."

New Info in CVG article

Monday 7 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Gaming website ComputerAndVideoGames.com has posted info about their experience with GTAIV's Liberty City. Info includes:

" * Mini-games confirmed for GTA IV include pool, basketball, darts, golfing at driving ranges and arcade games, such as Go Go Space Monkey, which was also featured in San Andreas.
* The trucking company from San Andreas, RS Haul, returns and missions based around the company have returned as well.
* 'Gruppe Sechs' securicars have returned and players are able to steal them and deliver them to locations for a reward, but this task is said to be much trickier than in previous games.
* The game features many references to 'Crackdown,' a GTA-style game available for the Xbox 360 which also uses RenderWare, GTA's previous engine.
* Vehicles such as the Stallion and Comet from previous games appear in IV, as well as the NRG500, a motorcycle. A new motorcycle called the NHG900RR is also confirmed to be in the game and is rumored to be the fastest one available.
* GTA IV contains photos of Vice City, similar to the maps found scattered around San Andreas. References to previous GTA games through graffiti is also spread throughout the city.
* Binco, Burger Shot, 24-7 and Clucking Bell are all returning, in addition to many other brands from previous GTA games. 'Alderney' features several strip malls where you can purchase food, clothing, and more.
* New York City-style news tickers on buildings will be constantly updated based on what crimes you commit in the game.
* There are several innuendos and references to the Hot Coffee mod for San Andreas.
* As previously mentioned, pedestrian actions will be incredibly varied and detailed compared to previous games.
* "Flushing Meadows (site of the NY World's Fair) is featured in its entirety, as is a recreation of theme park Astroland at Coney Island. Rides such as the Corpse Ride and Cyclone can be tested, and the major tourist spots will play a part in some missions."
* Sprunk can be purchased, as in San Andreas, to replenish your health.
* Similarly to Saints Row, yet another GTA-style sandbox game, phone numbers are scattered throughout the city and you can call them for whatever services they entail.
* A place called the Videogeddon Arcade allows you to play arcade games and posters attacking violent video games can be seen.
* The 'sky tram' featured on the box-art for GTA IV can actually be used as a mode of transportation, although it costs money as do the taxis."

71 Screencaps

Friday 28 March 2008 | Post A Comment

Our partner site GTA4.tv has posted 71 screencaps of the new trailer! Be sure and check it out.

"You've enjoyed the video, now enjoy examining the screencaps. We took a bit more time over these captures than we would have previously because the video compression had corrupted some of the frames of the video. You won't have noticed it when watching the trailer, but as screencaps, some of them were just very poor quality. Luckily, being the nice guys that we are, we spent a few extra hours touching up the poorer screenshots so you won't notice too much wrong with any of them. Most of them look like actual screenshots. You can check them out in the Image Gallery, or jump onto the Screencaps page to view our final update from the final trailer before the game's release."

Rockstar + Amazon = Downloadable Songs!

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post A Comment

An ambitious announcement has been made detailing a partnership between Rockstar games and internet giant Amazon. Yahoo has an article explaining what exactly this means. Here is the highlight of the article:

"Advertised throughout Liberty City, the cheekily-named "ZiT" technology is built into the game's mobile phone interface system. As players cruise around the world listening to the in-game radio, they can at any point 'mark' a song by opening their phone and dialing the number ZIT-555-0100. Gamers will then receive a text message with the song and artist names, and if they're registered at the forthcoming Rockstar Games Social Club community site, they'll find an e-mail waiting in their inbox with a direct link to a custom playlist on Amazon.com. All songs tagged "ZiT" will be stored here, available for preview and purchase at Amazon's going rate of $.89-$.99 per track. Best of all, those MP3s are free of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations imposed on files downloaded through Apple's iTunes store and thus can be imported into any computer or digital device with no constraints."

Excellent idea. But if your one of those Limewire or Torrent users your luck has just ran out as Rockstar have stated that None of those tracks, however, are accessible outside the game.

Rockstar Games Social Club Revealed

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post A Comment

It seems that "Game 3.0" is really happening. Rockstar have just announced Rockstar Social Club. On April 15th you can sign up with a Playstation Network ID/Xbox Live Gamercard and share your stats and more! Here is the full list of features:

* LCPD Police Blotter - A virtual map and tracker of single-player criminal activity logged in Liberty City from the aggregated data of millions of connected players - showing the most dangerous areas of town, most commonly used weapons and more.

* The Story Gang - This special single-player leaderboard recognizes players who complete Niko Bellic's main story arc of Grand Theft Auto IV - The leaderboard ranks players according to the total amount of playing time it's taken to complete the story, as well as a historical rank by who has completed it first. Members of this club will receive special online widgets and merit badges marking all of their in-game accomplishments.

* The 100% Club - Watch to see who will be the first to complete 100% of the game. The first ten people to be identified on the Social Club as reaching 100% will be sent an ultra-rare commemorative 'key to the city' to mark their accomplishment. In the future, the 100% Club will then carry a historical leaderboard showing rankings of who has completed 100% of a game in the shortest span of playing hours.

* The Hall of Fame -- This area will dynamically recognize those singularly elite players who have reached the top of the hill on various statistical leaderboards, and will also contain a personal awards display of special in-game landmarks and successes in Social Club competitions.

* The Liberty City Marathon -- A ranking of special physical milestones achieved in the game - from the amount of miles walked, driven, or swam - to the number of bullets fired and stunt-jumps jumped. There will be additional special marathon-based competitions in the future from this area as well.
